Icon design for the New York City pedestrian wayfinding program, Walk NYC. Signs are positioned on the street level throughout all five boroughs of NYC, in varying sizes and levels of information.

A custom cut of Helvetica Neue (named after our client, the Department of Transportation / DOT) was developed specifically for this project — design by Hamish Smyth and Monotype.

With reference to the AIGA symbol signs, every icon was redrawn to share relationships to Helvetica Neue DOT at 16 pt (as set on the maps).

This concept, along with a strict grid system, allowed a strong family of icons to be developed.

Icons were later applied to redesigned parking signs for the City of New York — design by Pentagram.
